Krishna's Birth

Krishna was born to Devaki and her husband, Vasudeva into the Yadava Clan. Devaki had a brother named Kansa, a demon who was harming Mother Earth with some of the other demons. Mother Earth took the form of a cow and asked Lord Brahma for help. Lord Brahma told Lord Vishnu about this and he said that he would end this.

When Devaki was getting married, Kansa was told by fortune tellers that one of Devaki kids would kill him. Kansa decided to kill Devaki. Vasudeva begged for him to not kill Devaki and promised to give him each child to as soon as they were born. Kansa let go of his sister, and instead put Devaki and Vasudeva in prison and made sure that none of Devaki’s children survived. After that, as soon as a child was born, Kansa would smash the child’s head against a wall of the prison.

As soon as Krishna was born, a bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva woke up and heard a divine voice that told him to take Krishna across the Yamuna River and leave him with his friend Nandraja. Nandraja and his wife Yashoda had also given birth to a baby girl that night. Lord Vishnu’s Shesh Naag, a giant multi-headed snake, came and helped Vasudeva carry Krishna safely across. Vasudeva went to Nandraja’s house and exchanged the babies. Vasudeva was very sad. He headed back to the prison with the exchanged baby. The guards informed Kansa that Devaki’s eight child was finally born.

When Kansa tried to kill the exchanged baby, it transformed into Goddess Durga. She warned him that his death arrived in his kingdom, and would come back to punish Kansa for his sins. She also said that she could have killed him right their but she wouldn't so that Kansa would have no peace. She then vanished.
